The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has recovered the body of an 11-year-old boy who drowned in a water-filled pit at Adenta Aviation in the Greater Accra Region.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday, July 13, 2026, prompting an emergency search and recovery operation involving firefighters, police officers, and local traditional authorities.
Boy Identified as Samuel Awalime
The deceased child has been identified as Samuel Awalime.
According to the GNFS, firefighters received a distress call reporting that a child had drowned in a pit or small river within the Adenta Aviation area.
A rescue team from the Adenta Fire Station was immediately dispatched to the scene to begin search and recovery efforts.
Firefighters Lead Recovery Operation
The operation was led by Divisional Officer III (DO III) Obosu of the Adenta Fire Station.
Firefighters worked for several hours alongside personnel from the Ghana Police Service, local chiefs, and members of the traditional council to locate and recover the boy’s body.
The recovery mission was successfully completed at approximately 10:50 a.m., after which the remains were handed over to the Adenta Divisional Police Command for further action.
Police Investigation Underway
Details surrounding the circumstances that led to the drowning remain unclear.
While reports circulating on social media, including a report by Adom News on Instagram, suggest that the boy may have gone fishing with a group of seven other children before the incident, authorities have not officially confirmed the sequence of events.
The Adenta Police Command has commenced investigations to establish the exact cause of the tragedy and determine the events leading up to the drowning.
The incident has renewed calls for increased supervision of children around open pits, water bodies, and other potentially dangerous areas, especially during school breaks and periods when children may engage in outdoor activities.
