The government has commended young people in Bukom for their swift intervention following a devastating road crash that killed a 22-year-old woman and left 22 others injured.
The accident occurred at Bukom Park in Accra after a vehicle reportedly suffered brake failure and travelled uncontrollably for nearly one kilometer, striking pedestrians along its path.
The deceased has been identified as Esther Arthur. Several of the injured victims remain under medical care at the Ussher Hospital and Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
Bukom youth lead rescue operation
Immediately after the crash, young people in the community rushed to assist those trapped or injured before professional emergency responders arrived.
They pulled victims away from the wreckage, administered basic first aid and arranged vehicles to transport the critically injured to nearby hospitals. Their rapid response has been credited with preventing further deaths.
Government representatives praised the residents for demonstrating courage, compassion and civic responsibility during the emergency.
Government promises financial support
A government delegation visited Bukom to sympathize with the bereaved family, injured victims and the wider community.
Officials announced that financial assistance would be provided to support the volunteer rescue teams and ease some of the burdens arising from the tragedy. An undisclosed amount has also been made available to help settle the medical bills of hospitalized victims, including affected children.
The delegation further assured families that the government would continue monitoring the condition of those receiving treatment.
Mental-health professionals and social workers are also expected to provide counselling to survivors, witnesses and relatives experiencing trauma following the incident.
Driver remanded as investigation continues
The driver of the vehicle remains in police custody and has reportedly been remanded for two weeks as investigations continue.
Police investigators and vehicle examiners are assessing the claim that the accident was caused by complete brake failure. Their findings are expected to determine whether mechanical defects, poor maintenance, dangerous driving or other factors contributed to the crash.
Relatives of the deceased have called for a transparent investigation and appropriate legal action if negligence is established.
Authorities have appealed for calm while the investigation proceeds and have urged vehicle owners to undertake regular maintenance and safety inspections.
