
The Government of Ghana has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, with President John Dramani Mahama extending his heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon and the nation.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, and signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government described the death of the Yaa Naa as a significant national loss.
President Mahama conveyed his deepest sympathies to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon and all Ghanaians, noting that the country was mourning the loss of a revered traditional leader.
The statement paid tribute to Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II as a distinguished ruler whose reign ushered in healing, reconciliation and lasting peace in Dagbon after years of conflict. It said his unwavering commitment to unity, stability and the well-being of his people fostered an environment that promoted development and strengthened cooperation between traditional authorities and the state.
According to the government, the late King’s contribution to peacebuilding, leadership and national development was immeasurable. It added that his wisdom, dedication to service and commitment to harmony would remain an inspiration to future generations.
The statement concluded with prayers for the peaceful repose of Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II and expressed hope that his legacy of peace and unity would continue to endure.
