The Government of Ghana is preparing to introduce a Diaspora National Service Program aimed at strengthening the connection between young Ghanaians living abroad and their ancestral homeland.
The initiative is designed to give participants firsthand exposure to Ghana’s culture, institutions, and communities, while encouraging greater engagement in the country’s long-term development.
Program Targets Young Ghanaians Abroad
According to the proposed framework, the program will primarily target young members of the Ghanaian diaspora who were born and raised outside Ghana, have completed high school, but have not yet begun their university education.
Selected participants will travel to Ghana for an approximately two-month placement, during which they will take part in activities intended to deepen their understanding of the country’s history, governance, culture, and civic life.
The government believes the immersive experience will help participants develop stronger ties to Ghana before returning overseas to pursue higher education.
Announcement Made at Diaspora Students Forum
The initiative was announced by Kofi Okyere-Darko, Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President, during the maiden edition of the Ghana Diaspora Students Forum (GDSF 2026).
Addressing participants at the event, he outlined the government’s vision of creating meaningful opportunities for young Ghanaians abroad to reconnect with their roots while contributing to national development.
Strengthening Ghana’s Engagement with Its Diaspora
The proposed Diaspora National Service Program forms part of the government’s broader strategy to deepen engagement with Ghanaians living overseas.
It complements flagship initiatives such as the Year of Return and its successor, Beyond the Return, both of which seek to strengthen relationships with the global Ghanaian community and encourage greater contributions to the country’s economic, social, and cultural development.
By introducing a structured service program for diaspora youth, the government hopes to cultivate a new generation of globally connected Ghanaians with a lasting commitment to the nation’s future.
