The Government of Ghana has, in partnership with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, reopened the Achimota Transfer Station to strengthen waste management efforts in the wake of recent floods that left large volumes of refuse and debris across parts of the Greater Accra Region. The move is expected to speed up waste evacuation and help avert potential public health concerns.
The reopening of the facility forms part of emergency measures aimed at restoring sanitation in flood-affected communities and preventing potential public health risks associated with the accumulation of waste.
The Achimota Transfer Station will serve as a critical collection and sorting point, enabling waste trucks to offload refuse more efficiently before it is transported to designated final disposal sites. Authorities say the move is expected to significantly improve waste management operations and reduce delays in clearing refuse from affected areas.
Government officials noted that the decision underscores their commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring communities recover quickly from the aftermath of the floods.
Zoomlion Ghana Limited has deployed additional personnel, equipment, and logistics to support the intensified cleanup exercise. The company is working closely with metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies (MMDAs) to remove flood debris, clear choked drains, and restore environmental cleanliness across affected communities.
Officials have also appealed to residents to support the exercise by properly disposing of waste and avoiding the dumping of refuse into drains and waterways, a practice that contributes to flooding during heavy rains.
The reopening of the Achimota Transfer Station is expected to enhance the efficiency of waste evacuation operations while strengthening the country’s emergency response to sanitation challenges following natural disasters.
As cleanup efforts continue, both the government and Zoomlion have reaffirmed their commitment to building cleaner, healthier, and more resilient communities through improved waste management and environmental sanitation.
