GPRTU Warns Drivers of Suspension for Charging Above Approved 8% Fare Increase

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has warned commercial drivers against charging fares above the approved 8% increase, saying offenders risk suspension and action by law enforcement personnel.

The warning follows the introduction of the revised nationwide transport fares on Saturday, September 26, 2026. The adjustment was agreed upon after weeks of negotiations involving the Ministry of Transport, the GPRTU and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council over rising operating costs.

Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, said union members who impose unauthorised charges would face immediate suspension and a temporary prohibition on loading passengers at transport terminals.

The union has also deployed a task force to monitor compliance at transport stations and along major commuter routes. The monitoring exercise is intended to identify drivers charging beyond the agreed adjustment and ensure passengers pay the approved fares.

According to the GPRTU, the Ministry of Transport has supported the enforcement effort by deploying national security personnel to assist the task force, particularly in dealing with drivers who do not belong to the union.

To ensure consistency in applying the increase, the GPRTU said it had supplied fare calculation charts to its regional and local branches. These guides provide the approved amounts drivers should charge, reducing the scope for miscalculations or arbitrary increases.

The union stressed that the fare adjustment does not give individual drivers permission to determine their own rates. Commercial operators are expected to follow the approved structure across their respective routes.

Passengers have been urged to remain alert to excessive charges and report offending vehicles to station operators or union officials. The GPRTU also encouraged commuters to challenge demands for fares above the authorised amounts as it works to enforce compliance.
