GRIDCo Restores Power to Parts of Accra After Transformer Fire

The Ghana Grid Company Limited

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has restored electricity to some communities affected by a transformer fire at its Mallam Substation, while engineers continue efforts to reconnect the remaining areas.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:36 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, when a fault triggered a fire in one of the facility’s transformers, interrupting supply to parts of Accra. Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service responded and extinguished the blaze.

The Fire Service identified Lapaz, Anyaa and Awoshie among the communities likely to experience disruptions following the incident.

In its update, GRIDCo said technical teams were investigating the cause of the fault and had begun arrangements to replace the damaged transformer.

Although electricity had been restored to some affected areas, the company did not provide a definite timeline for reconnecting all customers.

GRIDCo apologized to residents, businesses and other stakeholders for the inconvenience and thanked them for their patience as restoration work continued.
