The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has replaced a transmission tower that was damaged in a tanker explosion at Ashaiman.
The replacement has allowed the affected 161kV Tema-Achimota transmission line to resume normal operations.
GRIDCo said the replacement work was done in two phases on August 16 and 23 and was completed at 11 a.m. on Sunday. The company then restored power to the line.
The tower was damaged after a tanker exploded while welding work was being carried out underneath the transmission lines.
The incident has raised concerns about activities taking place within GRIDCo’s Right-of-Way (RoW), where such activities can damage power infrastructure and put lives at risk.
In response, GRIDCo said it will begin a nationwide public education campaign to educate people about the dangers of encroaching on transmission corridors and the need to keep the areas around power infrastructure clear.
The company said its Land Management, Information Services and Corporate Communications teams will lead the campaign.
The move follows a one-month deadline given by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Jinapor, for people occupying or using GRIDCo’s Right-of-Way to vacate the areas.
GRIDCo stressed that keeping the Right-of-Way clear is not only about protecting power infrastructure but also about preventing accidents and saving lives.
The company has therefore urged the public to take safety precautions seriously and avoid activities that could damage transmission facilities or endanger people living and working near high-voltage power lines.
