Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season under Enzo Maresca with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium.
Erling Haaland scored the only goal of the match in the 26th minute, powering a header beyond Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth following an excellent cross from Antoine Semenyo.
The move began with debutant Enzo Fernández, who played a well-weighted pass into Semenyo’s path before the Ghanaian international delivered for Haaland.
The goal was the Norwegian striker’s third of the league campaign and the 300th club goal of his senior career. It also took Haaland to 20 headed Premier League goals for City, making him the club’s leading scorer in that category.
Deadline-day arrivals Fernández and Iliman Ndiaye were both handed their Manchester City debuts.
Fernández was initially named among the substitutes but was drafted into the starting lineup after Nico O’Reilly sustained a back injury during the warm-up.
The Argentine midfielder quickly settled into City’s system, producing an influential performance alongside Elliot Anderson and playing an important role in the decisive goal.
Ndiaye also started following his arrival from Everton, adding movement and versatility to Maresca’s attack.
Manchester City dominated possession and completed 803 passes, their highest total in a Premier League match since 2023. Despite controlling much of the contest, the hosts struggled to turn their possession into clear scoring opportunities.
Haaland had another effort ruled out, while Coventry remained disciplined and compact under manager Frank Lampard.
The visitors became increasingly dangerous during the second half and finished the match strongly. Substitutes and forwards, including Ellis Simms and Taiwo Awoniyi, tested Gianluigi Donnarumma as Coventry searched for an equalizer.
The Italian goalkeeper produced several important saves to preserve City’s advantage and secure their third consecutive league victory. An equalizer would not have been undeserved following Coventry’s late pressure.
Milan van Ewijk received the first yellow card of the match in the 19th minute. Ethan Pinnock and City defender Abdukodir Khusanov were also booked during second-half stoppage time.
The result left Manchester City with nine points from their opening three matches and preserved Maresca’s 100% record in the Premier League.
Coventry, meanwhile, remained without a point despite producing an organized performance that caused the home side significant problems.
City’s official report described the victory as hard-earned while confirming that Fernández and Ndiaye made winning debuts at the Etihad.
