Under the leadership of its chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, the electoral body says it is strengthening its institutional systems, improving transparency and upgrading election technology to protect the integrity of the ballot.
INEC has identified the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) as important tools in its preparations. The commission plans to improve the systems to strengthen voter accreditation, reduce electoral irregularities and make election results more accessible to the public.
The electoral body has also sought to address concerns about the illegal collection and stockpiling of Permanent Voter Cards. Officials from INEC’s Kwara State office explained that biometric verification makes it difficult for anyone to vote with another person’s PVC.
According to the commission, possessing several voter cards does not give an individual the ability to cast multiple ballots because the voter’s biometric information must correspond with the details stored in the accreditation system.
INEC representatives have further reiterated the commission’s commitment to political neutrality. Speaking at public engagements, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists Democracy Roundtable, officials maintained that the commission’s responsibility is to protect voting rights and administer the electoral process fairly, rather than influence the outcome in favour of any political party or candidate.
The commission has also called on political parties, civil society organizations, the media and security agencies to support efforts aimed at delivering peaceful and credible elections. It stressed that public confidence will depend on transparency, accountability and consistent adherence to electoral laws.
