A 21-year-old ex-convict, Kingsford Quarshie, alias “Cash Money,” has been sentenced to eight years in prison for breaking into a supermarket in Tarkwa and stealing cash and goods worth more than GH¢54,000.
Quarshie was sentenced by the Tarkwa Circuit Court after pleading guilty to charges of causing unlawful damage, unlawful entry and stealing.
His accomplice, 20-year-old university student Joshua Hammond, alias “Gucci,” was also sentenced to 12 months in prison for abetment.
The court heard that Quarshie, Hammond and a third accomplice, identified only as Collins, who is currently at large, broke into the supermarket and its warehouse after damaging burglar-proof windows.
The three reportedly stole GH¢50,000 in cash, a TM1 laptop valued at GH¢3,000, and assorted provisions worth GH¢1,927.90.
According to the prosecution, their activities were captured by a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera installed in the area. The footage reportedly assisted investigators in identifying the suspects.
Quarshie and Hammond were later arrested and brought before the court, where they pleaded guilty to the charges and were convicted.
The court subsequently sentenced Quarshie to eight years’ imprisonment in hard labour, while Hammond was handed a 12-month prison sentence for his role in the break-in.
