Defense Minister-designate Kenneth Gilbert Adjei has pledged to approach his new assignment with renewed energy and an unwavering commitment to protecting Ghana’s national security interests.
Adjei made the commitment after President John Dramani Mahama reassigned him from the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources as part of a major cabinet reshuffle.
His nomination fills the vacancy created by the death of former Defense Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah in the military helicopter crash of August 6, 2025.
In a statement shared on social media, the 47-year-old minister-designate expressed gratitude to President Mahama for continuing to place confidence in his ability to serve the country.
Adjei said he remained committed to supporting Ghana’s defense architecture and protecting the nation at a time of growing security concerns within the West African subregion.
Reflecting on his previous ministerial role, he described his tenure as one built on service, humility and cooperation. He thanked officials and employees of the Ministry of Works and Housing for their dedication and sacrifices, acknowledging that the achievements recorded under his leadership were the result of collective effort.
The minister-designate also reiterated his opposition to corruption and the misuse of public resources.
“I firmly stand against corruption and those who exploit our nation’s resources. Looting not only compromises our integrity but diminishes the wealth of our nation,” he stated.
Adjei added a humorous note to his announcement by suggesting that the formal nature of the defense portfolio might require him to reduce his passionate sporting exchanges on social media.
He specifically referenced his regular banter with supporters of Chelsea, Manchester United whom he jokingly called “Maa U” and Arsenal.
He concluded the statement with the hashtag “#EAGLEEYES” and a call to “activate all body cameras,” signaling his intention to promote vigilance and accountability.
The nomination represents a return to familiar territory for Adjei, who served as Deputy Minister of Defense between 2015 and 2017 during President Mahama’s previous administration.
He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Peace, Security and Intelligence Management, giving him an academic background relevant to his new assignment.
His previous experience in the defense sector is expected to be important as Ghana responds to security challenges including instability in the Sahel, cross-border crime and maritime threats in the Gulf of Guinea.
Adjei’s appointment remains subject to parliamentary vetting and approval.
