A Kenyan police officer has been arrested following the fatal shooting of a 45-year-old woman at a General Service Unit mess compound in Naiberi, Uasin Gishu County.
The victim, identified as Doris Murei Nandi, was reportedly romantically involved with the suspect, Police Constable Nathan Kirwa. Kirwa was serving as an armed bodyguard attached to Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii at the time of the incident.
According to police reports, the shooting occurred at about 5:00 p.m. after a domestic disagreement broke out between the two at the GSU Mess compound. The confrontation allegedly escalated, leading Kirwa to discharge his service firearm several times at close range.
Nandi sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene.
A forensic team led by Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani later examined the area and recovered seven spent 9mm cartridges, a rifle holster and a Toyota Corolla believed to belong to the suspect.
Kirwa reportedly fled the compound shortly after the shooting, prompting a brief manhunt. Detectives subsequently arrested him and placed him in police custody as investigations continued ahead of his expected arraignment.
The victim’s body was transported to the Eldoret Hospital Mortuary for preservation and an autopsy. Authorities are expected to use the postmortem findings and forensic evidence gathered at the scene as part of the murder investigation.
