Kotoka International Airport Introduces Advanced Security Scanners Allowing Passengers to Keep Shoes and Belts On

Ghana Airport

Travelers passing through Kotoka International Airport (ACC) can now enjoy faster and more convenient security checks following the deployment of advanced screening technology by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).

The new state-of-the-art security equipment, announced in a public notice on July 11, 2026, is being introduced across Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 as part of efforts to modernize airport operations, reduce congestion, and improve passenger experience.

The upgraded scanners allow security teams to detect potential threats without requiring passengers to remove several personal items during routine screening, significantly reducing the time spent at checkpoints.

Passengers Can Keep Shoes and Belts On

Under the new screening system, passengers will no longer need to follow many of the traditional security procedures that previously slowed down the screening process.

The upgraded technology allows travelers to keep several items inside their luggage or on their person, including:

Laptops and Electronic Devices

Passengers can leave larger electronic items, including laptops and tablets, inside their carry-on bags instead of removing them for separate scanning.

Shoes and Belts

Travelers can keep their shoes, sneakers, and belts on during security screening unless they are specifically selected for additional checks by security officers.

Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels

Approved liquids, aerosols, and gels can remain inside hand luggage during screening.

However, GACL emphasized that existing international aviation rules remain unchanged. Passengers must still comply with the requirement that liquids carried in cabin baggage are limited to containers of 100 milliliters or less.

Automatic Tray Return System Improves Passenger Flow

Alongside the new scanners, GACL has introduced an Automatic Tray Return System designed to improve efficiency at security checkpoints.

The automated system returns empty security trays to the front of the screening area without requiring manual collection by airport staff or passengers.

Airport authorities say the technology will reduce delays caused by tray shortages and improve the speed at which travelers collect their belongings after screening.

The upgrade is expected to minimize bottlenecks, especially during peak travel periods when passenger volumes are highest.

Technology Being Introduced Gradually

GACL explained that the transition to the new screening technology will take place in phases.

During the implementation period, the advanced scanners will operate alongside existing security lanes to ensure a smooth changeover and maintain uninterrupted airport operations.

Passengers are advised to follow instructions from airport security personnel throughout the transition period.

Security Checks Remain in Place

Despite the introduction of new technology, airport authorities stressed that security procedures remain strict.

Security officers retain the authority to request additional screening, including the removal of shoes, belts, liquids, or other items, if a passenger is selected for further inspection or if the system detects a potential concern.

GACL said the upgrade represents a major step toward improving efficiency at Ghana’s main international gateway while maintaining global aviation security standards.

The modernization of Kotoka International Airport’s screening system is expected to provide passengers with a faster, smoother, and more convenient travel experience.
