The Kpando Circuit Court has sentenced a 31-year-old trader, Stella Amedzorme, to three years’ imprisonment with hard labor for abducting an eight-month-old baby from the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.
The court handed down the sentence on August 3, 2026, after Amedzorme pleaded guilty to the child-abduction charge.
The incident occurred on July 16, when the child’s mother, Gloria Mansah Dzagbo, was selling groundnuts at the market.
According to the prosecution’s account, Amedzorme approached the young mother as a customer and offered to hold her crying baby while she went to collect additional groundnuts needed to complete a sale.
When Dzagbo returned, she could not find either the woman or her child. A search was immediately organized before the matter was reported to the Kpando police.
Investigators circulated information about the missing infant nationwide and launched an intelligence-led operation to trace the suspect.
Police later tracked Amedzorme to Bowiri-Toviate in the Oti Region, where she was arrested and the baby rescued. The child underwent a medical examination, was confirmed to be in good health and was reunited with his mother.
Investigations reportedly established that Amedzorme had taken the child to her boyfriend and presented the infant as their biological son after previously claiming that she was pregnant.
Police said she admitted taking the child during questioning. She reportedly claimed that she acted on instructions connected to her partner, an assertion that formed part of the continuing investigation.
The Volta North Regional Police Command said efforts were underway to locate the partner and determine whether any other individuals were involved.
Investigators also received information suggesting that Amedzorme may have attempted to obtain another woman’s child through a similar approach at the market earlier that day.
The police have appealed to members of the public with relevant information about the case or the wanted individual to assist the investigation.
Amedzorme has begun serving her three-year custodial sentence, while inquiries into the wider circumstances of the abduction continue.
