Liberian authorities have announced the largest drug seizure in the country’s history after confiscating nearly four tones of cocaine with an estimated street value of $370 million.
The massive operation was carried out on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, during coordinated raids on suspected illegal storage facilities in Duazon and the VOA Community in Paynesville, about 20 kilometers east of the capital, Monrovia.
According to Liberia National Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman, officers recovered 3,971 kilograms of high-grade cocaine concealed inside dozens of sealed suitcases and cartons loaded onto a cargo truck.
Months-Long Investigation Leads to Major Breakthrough
The record-breaking seizure follows an extensive 18-month investigation conducted by a joint security task force targeting international drug trafficking networks believed to have re-established operations in Liberia between 2018 and 2023.
Authorities described the operation as a significant blow to transnational criminal organizations using West Africa as a trafficking corridor.
Foreign Nationals Among Those Arrested
Several suspects were arrested during the raid, including two heavily armed foreign nationals.
According to investigators:
- One suspect was carrying both Spanish and Colombian passports.
- Another suspect is a Serbian national.
Security agencies have indicated that investigations are continuing to identify other members of the trafficking network and determine whether additional arrests will follow.
Government Vows Tough Action
Liberian Vice President Jeremiah Koung praised the security forces for what he described as a major success in the country’s fight against organized crime.
He warned that anyone linked to the drug trafficking syndicate would be prosecuted, stating that those responsible would face the full force of the law “regardless of who you are.”
Authorities have not yet disclosed where the cocaine originated or its intended destination, saying investigations remain ongoing.
West Africa Remains a Key Drug Transit Route
The seizure comes amid growing international concern over the increasing use of West Africa as a transit point for cocaine shipments moving from South America to European markets.
The United Nations and the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime have repeatedly warned that international drug cartels are exploiting porous borders and limited enforcement capacity across the region to expand their operations.
Second Major Cocaine Seizure in Weeks
The latest operation follows another significant interception earlier this year.
On June 8, 2026, security officials at Roberts International Airport seized more than 200 kilograms of cocaine valued at approximately $19 million.
In that case, traffickers allegedly attempted to conceal the drugs inside shipments disguised as food seasoning cubes and textiles destined for Europe.
The airport seizure sparked widespread criticism of the government’s response after several key suspects reportedly fled the country before they could be arrested.
Pressure Mounts on Boakai Administration
The latest record seizure comes as President Joseph Boakai’s administration faces increasing pressure to strengthen border security and crack down on international drug trafficking.
Since taking office in 2024, President Boakai has reshuffled the leadership of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) several times as part of efforts to improve the country’s anti-narcotics operations.
With nearly four tones of cocaine removed from circulation, Liberian authorities say the latest operation marks a major milestone in the country’s fight against transnational organized crime, while investigations continue to uncover the full extent of the trafficking network.
