President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to import rechargeable electric wheelchairs to improve mobility and independence for persons with disabilities in Ghana.
The proposed initiative forms part of his administration’s wider efforts to improve access to healthcare, assistive devices and social support for vulnerable citizens.
The wheelchairs are intended to help beneficiaries move around more independently and participate more fully in community and economic activities. Details of the number of wheelchairs, procurement timetable and beneficiary selection process have yet to be outlined.
The announcement reflects Mahama’s broader position that healthcare should be treated as an investment in national development rather than solely as a government expenditure.
Support for persons with disabilities has also continued at the local government level. The Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly recently assisted 51 persons with disabilities through a targeted support program.
The planned wheelchair provision comes alongside other social protection commitments, including enhanced healthcare and pension support for older people. Mahama has also directed state agencies to support the Mercy Ships medical mission, which provides specialized treatment to people who face barriers to accessing care.
His administration has additionally committed GH₵6.1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund as part of efforts to strengthen medical assistance for people in need.
For prospective wheelchair beneficiaries, the initiative could help reduce mobility barriers that affect access to employment, education, healthcare and everyday services.
