President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service (GES) and leaders of striking teacher unions to meet on Friday, October 2, 2026, in an effort to resolve the ongoing industrial action.
The meeting is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Ministry of Education in Accra and will address the financial and administrative grievances behind the strike.
An invitation issued on October 1 and signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, also called for the participation of six other state institutions. Among those expected to attend are the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) and the Ministry of Finance.
The discussions will seek an immediate resolution to the dispute while examining the implications of the teachers’ demands for the national compensation budget and public finances.
Outstanding promotion arrears and disagreements over a proposed allowance adjustment by the FWSC are among the concerns driving the strike by pre-tertiary teachers.
As part of efforts to address the payment difficulties, the GES has been working to clear outstanding input forms and promotion letters for an estimated 58,000 to 60,000 teaching staff. Processing the documents is intended to enable the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to facilitate the related payments.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has appealed to the striking teachers to resume classroom duties while negotiations continue.
He stressed the need to safeguard teaching and learning and avoid further disruption to the academic calendar, which has recently returned to the traditional September-to-July cycle.
The President’s intervention brings education authorities, union representatives and institutions responsible for pay administration together to seek agreement on the outstanding issues and a path towards restoring normal classroom activities.
