President John Dramani Mahama has congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election, describing the victory as “well-deserved” and expressing optimism about stronger cooperation between Ghana and Brazil.
In a social media statement on October 26, 2026, Mahama highlighted the historical ties between the two countries and their shared interest in advancing the priorities of the Global South.
He pointed to the “Accra Reset” initiative as a platform for pursuing common goals and strengthening cooperation following Lula’s renewed mandate.
Lula won Brazil’s presidential runoff held on Sunday, October 25, defeating Liberal Party candidate Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested race.
The reported final results showed Lula securing 64,256,232 votes, representing 51.79% of valid ballots, while Bolsonaro received 59,826,041 votes, or 48.21%. A further 4,153,801 ballots were recorded as invalid or null.
The outcome gives Lula a fourth presidential term overall, following his return to office in 2023 after two earlier terms. His runoff victory also reversed Bolsonaro’s lead in the first round of voting on October 4.
Bolsonaro has reportedly raised objections concerning election-day arrangements, including extensions to voting hours.
Mahama’s congratulatory message underscored his administration’s interest in building on Ghana’s relationship with Brazil and working with Lula to promote shared development and diplomatic priorities.
