Mahama Grants Clemency to 863 Convicts Ahead of Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary

President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has granted clemency to 863 convicted persons, approving outright releases and sentence reductions ahead of Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary.

The decision, announced on Monday, October 5, 2026, was taken under Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution following consultation with the Council of State.

A statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, described the initiative as an act of mercy and national reflection.

First-time offenders account for the largest group, with 819 granted outright release. Thirteen inmates aged 70 and above, six seriously ill prisoners and two beneficiaries considered under special recommendations have also been approved for release.

Eleven prisoners will have their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment, while six serving life sentences will instead serve fixed terms of 20 years.

Three beneficiaries were considered following petitions, while another three fall under a category described as “others,” for which further details were not provided.

The Presidency has directed the relevant state institutions to take the necessary steps to implement the releases and sentence adjustments.
