President John Dramani Mahama has concluded his two-day “Resetting Ghana Tour” of the Upper West Region with an inspection of the proposed site for a new regional airport in Wa.
During the visit, President Mahama announced that the Ghana Airports Company had secured full funding for the project. He said the procurement process had also been completed and contractors selected, paving the way for construction to begin soon.
The planned airport will be equipped with modern navigational systems and runway lighting to support safe flight operations during the day and at night.
President Mahama explained that the existing Wa airstrip was no longer suitable for long-term aviation development because of limited space and the continued expansion of the regional capital.
He said the decision to locate the new airport outside the urban center was intended to accommodate Wa’s projected growth over the next 20 years while creating enough space for future expansion of the facility.
The project is expected to improve connections between the Upper West Region and other parts of Ghana. It will also significantly shorten travel time between Wa and Accra, reducing a nine-to-10-hour journey by road to a flight of approximately one hour and 15 minutes.
The airport inspection was the final activity of President Mahama’s working tour of the region.
As part of the visit, the President inspected progress on the Wa-Han road under the government’s Big Push infrastructure program. He assured residents that the entire road linking Wa and Bolgatanga would eventually be asphalted.
President Mahama also assessed work on 24-Hour Economy Market projects in Nadowli and Poyentanga and inspected Ghana Education Trust Fund projects at Han Senior High School.
The tour further included a citizen engagement at the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies in Wa, where the President interacted with residents and stakeholders on the government’s Resetting Ghana agenda.
