President John Dramani Mahama joined Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali on October 23, 2026, to inaugurate the Megech Irrigation Development Project in Gondar, Ethiopia.
The project is designed to strengthen agricultural production, improve access to drinking water and support economic activity in the surrounding communities.
Its completion follows an 18-year delay. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed restarted work three years ago, paving the way for the infrastructure to be brought into operation.
The facility has a reservoir covering 870 hectares, with a storage capacity of 185 million cubic metres of water. It is expected to provide irrigation for approximately 17,000 hectares of farmland, supporting efforts to improve food security.
Beyond agriculture, the project will supply clean drinking water to Gondar and neighboring towns. It is also expected to create opportunities for fisheries and tourism, contributing to the region’s wider development.
President Mahama commended Ethiopia’s commitment to completing the project, acknowledging the effort required to deliver the long-delayed initiative.
The inauguration formed part of his visit to Ethiopia ahead of the 12th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa. Following the ceremony, he headed to Bahir Dar, where he is scheduled to chair the forum.
