President John Dramani Mahama has rallied the Black Stars ahead of their opening match against Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging the team to play with determination, pride and a strong sense of national responsibility.
In a statement issued on June 17 by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President assured the national team of the unwavering support of both the government and the Ghanaian people as they begin their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup.
Mahama described Ghana’s qualification for the global showpiece as a reflection of the country’s resilience and fighting spirit. He reminded the players that representing Ghana on football’s biggest stage comes with a responsibility that extends beyond the game itself.
According to the President, the players are carrying the hopes, aspirations and heritage of millions of Ghanaians. He noted that from communities across the country, citizens would be united in support of the team as they seek success on the world stage.
The President also called on Ghanaians living in Canada and throughout North America to provide strong support for the Black Stars during the tournament. He urged members of the diaspora to serve as the team’s “12th Man” by creating an atmosphere that would inspire the players and remind them that they have the backing of their compatriots wherever they play.
Mahama further announced that the government had secured the official television broadcast rights for the tournament to ensure that all Ghanaians are able to follow the Black Stars’ World Cup journey. He said the arrangement would allow fans across the country to watch every match and share in the excitement of the tournament regardless of their location.
Expressing confidence in the squad, the President encouraged the players to perform with courage and commitment, not only for themselves but also for the countless young Ghanaians who look up to them as role models. He urged the team to play for the national flag, inspire future generations and make the country proud.
As Ghana prepares to begin its World Cup campaign in Toronto, President Mahama expressed optimism that the Black Stars would rise to the occasion and showcase the talent, determination and resilience that have long defined Ghanaian football on the international stage.
