President John Dramani Mahama has reshuffled his Cabinet, nearly one year after the Ghana Air Force helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Environment, Science and Technology Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and six others.
In a statement issued by the Presidency on Friday, August 7, 2026, the President nominated Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.
Mahama Ayariga, MP, has also been nominated as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs. Both nominations are subject to approval by Parliament.
As part of the changes, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei has been reassigned to the Ministry of Defence, where he is expected to take over from the late Dr Omane Boamah.
The President has also moved Ahmed Ibrahim, MP, from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to head the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.
The reshuffle comes exactly one year after the August 6, 2025 Ghana Air Force helicopter crash, which killed Dr Omane Boamah, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed and six other occupants while they were travelling to Obuasi in connection with an anti-illegal mining programme.
Dr Omane Boamah, a medical doctor and former Communications Minister, was serving as Defence Minister at the time of his death. Mr Murtala Muhammed, who was the MP for Tamale Central and a former Deputy Minister of Trade, was the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.
The crash, which killed all eight people on board, plunged the country into mourning and left vacancies in two key government ministries.
The latest changes effectively fill the two ministerial positions, with Kenneth Gilbert Adjei taking over the Defence portfolio and Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings nominated to lead the Environment, Science and Technology Ministry, subject to parliamentary approval.
