Mahama Swears In New EC Deputies, Says Government Expects No Special Treatment

Mahama Swears In New EC Deputies

President John Dramani Mahama has urged two newly sworn-in Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission to remain impartial, stressing that neither his government nor his political party should receive preferential treatment.

Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah took their oaths at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 12, 2026, filling vacancies in the Commission’s senior leadership.

Addressing the appointees, President Mahama said their responsibility was to Ghana and its citizens. He called for consistent treatment of all political parties and candidates, with the protection of voters’ freedom to choose their leaders guiding the Commission’s work.

He also urged them to stand by lawful decisions, even when those decisions proved uncomfortable for the government.

“You must have the courage to uphold what is right even when it is inconvenient for those in power,” he said.

The President emphasized fairness, restraint and respect for the law as essential standards for the new deputies as they assume their responsibilities.

Their appointments follow the departure of Dr Bossman Eric Asare, the former Deputy Chairperson responsible for Corporate Affairs, and Samuel Tettey, who oversaw Operations. Dr Asare resigned effective July 31, 2026, to return to academia at the University of Ghana, while Mr Tettey retired after reaching the mandatory retirement age.

Dr Asamoah previously served as the Commission’s Director of Finance. A lawyer, chartered accountant and lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, he has also held positions as Head of Audit and Director of the EC’s Training Centre.

His experience includes participation in the administration of the 2012 and 2016 general elections.
