Mahama Urges Ghanaian Youth to Reject Shortcuts and Drug Abuse, Embrace Integrity

President of Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghana’s youth to believe in their abilities, uphold integrity, and reject shortcuts to success, including criminal activity and drug abuse, as the nation works toward rebuilding its values and strengthening national development.

Speaking at the 2026 National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving in Accra on July 1, President Mahama said Ghana’s transformation would depend not on rhetoric but on the discipline, character, and choices made by its younger generation.

Resetting Ghana’s Values

The President delivered his remarks during national prayer services held at the State House Forecourt and the National Mosque in Kanda under the theme:

“Resetting Our Values to Build the Ghana We Want.”

He used the occasion to advocate for a renewed national commitment to honesty, accountability, hard work, and responsible leadership, stressing that lasting progress can only be achieved when citizens embrace strong moral values.

Reject Shortcuts to Success

Addressing young Ghanaians, President Mahama cautioned against pursuing wealth through illegal or unethical means.

He encouraged the youth to focus on education, hard work, and perseverance, noting that lasting success is built on integrity, competence, and dedication rather than quick fixes.

According to the President, choosing the right path today will help create a stronger and more prosperous Ghana for future generations.

Call to Fight Drug Abuse

President Mahama also warned against drug addiction, describing substance abuse as a growing threat to the country’s young people and their future.

He urged the youth to avoid narcotics and other harmful substances, emphasizing that responsible choices are essential for personal development and national progress.

The President said protecting the health, talents, and potential of young people remains critical to Ghana’s long-term development.

Youth Must Lead Today’s Ghana

Reinforcing a message he has consistently delivered throughout the year, Mahama reminded young people that they are not merely the leaders of tomorrow but active participants in shaping Ghana today.

He encouraged them to take advantage of opportunities in innovation, entrepreneurship, education, and public service while contributing positively to national development.

The President stressed that the country’s future depends on the energy, creativity, and leadership of its youth.

Creating Opportunities at Home

Mahama said his administration remains committed to improving educational standards and expanding employment opportunities across the country.

He noted that government initiatives are aimed at ensuring young Ghanaians can build successful careers at home rather than feeling compelled to migrate abroad in search of economic opportunities.

According to the President, creating sustainable jobs and strengthening skills development will be key pillars of the government’s development agenda.

Archbishop Duncan-Williams Supports Reset Agenda

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving also featured remarks from Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, who expressed support for the President’s “Reset Agenda.”

The Archbishop called on Ghana’s political leadership to articulate and pursue a clear national vision capable of transforming the country’s economy and improving citizens’ quality of life.

Drawing comparisons with the development journeys of Singapore and Malaysia, he urged leaders to implement bold policies that would enable Ghanaians to prosper within their own country.

National Call for Renewal

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving brought together government officials, religious leaders, and citizens from across the country to reflect on Ghana’s future and seek divine guidance for national development.

President Mahama concluded by encouraging all Ghanaians to embrace integrity, discipline, and shared responsibility, saying that building the Ghana citizens aspire to requires collective effort, ethical leadership, and a renewed commitment to national values.
