President John Dramani Mahama has visited flood-hit communities in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region to assess the destruction and provide emergency supplies to affected residents.
During the visit on Friday, October 2, he presented food, bedding, roofing sheets and other essential items, assuring victims of continued government support as they recover from the disaster.
The flooding followed a prolonged downpour that began on September 27 and caused the River Dayi to overflow. According to the Ghana News Agency, more than 400 homes were submerged and over 5,000 residents displaced across seven communities, including Hohoe Zongo.
Addressing residents, President Mahama said increasingly unpredictable weather was making communities vulnerable to both excessive rainfall and drought. He noted that sustained rainfall upstream in Togo had also contributed to rising water levels in the River Dayi.
The President announced that his younger brother, the owner of Dzata Cement, had pledged 5,000 bags of cement to help rebuild damaged homes and other structures.
He urged regional and municipal authorities to coordinate with the National Disaster Management Organization to ensure that assistance reaches affected households and that recovery efforts include planning to reduce future flood risks.
Responsibility for distributing the presidential donation was entrusted to Volta Regional Minister James Gunu, Hohoe MP Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo and Municipal Chief Executive Prosper Kumi.
President Mahama also acknowledged earlier assistance from NADMO and government ministers, while thanking traditional leaders and local officials for supporting residents following the disaster.
