Mahama warns on indiscipline of appointees

President John Dramani Mahama has warned ministers, chief executives, board members and other political appointees that indiscipline, poor performance and conduct that undermines government will not be tolerated.

The warning was contained in a notice issued by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, as the administration continues to make changes to its political and institutional leadership.

The notice follows recent changes to the ministerial structure and the dissolution of some government boards, with further changes involving chief executives expected in the coming days.

According to the Secretary to the President, the changes are part of President Mahama’s broader effort to strengthen leadership across government, improve coordination and ensure that political appointees remain focused on the government’s policies and priorities.

The President expects ministers, deputy ministers, chief executives, board members and other appointees to carry out their responsibilities with integrity, diligence, humility and respect for established administrative procedures, the notice said.

It further cautioned appointees against any conduct that could weaken government cohesion, undermine institutional authority or hinder the effective implementation of government policies.

The notice also reminded political appointees that public office is a privilege and an opportunity to serve the people of Ghana. It stressed that performance will remain a key factor in determining whether an appointee continues to serve in government.

“The President will take any further action necessary to safeguard the integrity, effectiveness and responsiveness of his Administration,” the statement said.

The warning comes at a time when the government is reorganising leadership in several key institutions. It signals a stronger emphasis on discipline, accountability and results among ministers and other political appointees.

The Secretary to the President has therefore urged all appointees to cooperate with the ongoing changes and remain committed to the government’s agenda as the administration works to fulfil its mandate and improve the lives of Ghanaians.
