A 28-year-old man, identified as Bismarck Gbafa, has reportedly been arrested following the death of a 40-year-old man accused of attempting to rape his sister at Akyem Batabi in Ghana’s Eastern Region.
The deceased has been identified as Yaw Nyarko. The fatal incident allegedly occurred after Bismarck learned that Nyarko had attacked his sister, Celina Gbafa, while she was returning home from her farm.
According to preliminary accounts, Celina reported that Nyarko confronted her along the way, assaulted her with a stick and attempted to force himself on her. She reportedly managed to escape and later informed her brother about the alleged attack.
Angered by his sister’s account, Bismarck allegedly went to confront Nyarko over the incident. The confrontation reportedly escalated and resulted in Nyarko sustaining fatal injuries. The precise circumstances surrounding the killing, including whether a weapon was used, have not yet been officially established.
Security officers subsequently arrested Bismarck in connection with the death. He is expected to assist investigators in reconstructing the sequence of events that led to the confrontation and determining whether anyone else was involved.
The case has drawn attention within the Akyem Batabi community, with residents awaiting further information from the police. Investigators are also expected to take a formal statement from Celina concerning the alleged attempted rape and assault.
Authorities may rely on witness accounts, medical findings and evidence gathered from the scene to establish what happened. The deceased’s body is also expected to undergo a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Although the killing reportedly followed allegations of an attempted sexual assault, the accusations against Nyarko remain subject to investigation. Bismarck is likewise presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
