Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has revealed that several members of his first-team squad repeatedly sought updates on the club’s pursuit of Enzo Fernández during the final days of the transfer window.
Speaking ahead of City’s Premier League encounter with Coventry City, Maresca said senior players were eager to know whether the Argentina international would complete his move to the Etihad Stadium before the deadline.
“I can promise you that in the last four or five days, four or five players from the squad were asking if he is coming or not because they want him to be with us. It’s very important that he is with us, and we are 100% happy with that,” Maresca said.
The City manager attributed the excitement within the dressing room to Fernández’s experience, quality and winning mentality. The 25-year-old midfielder helped Argentina win the FIFA World Cup and previously worked with Maresca at Chelsea.
Fernández completed a £125 million transfer from Chelsea on Deadline Day, equaling the British transfer record set by Liverpool’s signing of Alexander Isak.
He signed a five-year contract that will keep him at Manchester City until 2031 and was assigned the No. 17 shirt.
His arrival completed a major restructuring of City’s midfield following the departures of Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Nico González. The club spent a reported £327 million on midfield reinforcements during the transfer window, recruiting Fernández alongside Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi.
Maresca confirmed that Fernández had already trained with his new teammates and was available for selection against Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium.
The Argentine could therefore make his Manchester City debut immediately as the club begins integrating its high-profile summer signings into the first team.
