Ghanaian football great Michael Essien has backed Caleb Yirenkyi to succeed in the Premier League following the 20-year-old midfielder’s record-breaking move to newly promoted Coventry City.
Essien worked closely with Yirenkyi as an individual development coach during their time together at Danish side FC Nordsjælland. Following confirmation of the transfer, the former Chelsea midfielder praised the youngster’s work ethic, attitude and commitment to improving his game.
“Your hard work, dedication, attitude, and willingness to learn will continue to push you to greater heights. Stay humble, disciplined, respectful, and keep working hard. Wishing you all the best,” Essien wrote on social media.
Yirenkyi’s transfer represents an important milestone for the player, Coventry City and Danish football. The deal is reportedly worth up to €30 million, making it the highest fee ever paid for a player moving from the Danish Superliga.
The transfer has also established a new club record for Coventry, underlining the Premier League newcomers’ confidence in the highly rated Ghanaian midfielder.
Yirenkyi experienced a rapid rise during his final season with Nordsjælland, establishing himself as a regular starter and attracting attention with his physical strength, ball-carrying ability and composure in midfield.
His performances led to frequent comparisons with Essien, who became one of Africa’s most accomplished midfielders during spells with Lyon, Chelsea, Real Madrid and AC Milan.
Yirenkyi’s progress also earned him a call-up to Ghana’s senior national team in 2025. He later announced himself on the global stage during the 2026 FIFA World Cup by scoring a stoppage-time winner in Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama.
That decisive goal made him the second-youngest Ghanaian footballer to score at a World Cup.
At Coventry City, Yirenkyi will reunite with fellow Black Stars international Brandon Thomas-Asante as the club prepares for its return to the Premier League.
Essien’s endorsement adds to the expectations surrounding the young midfielder, who will now attempt to translate his success in Denmark into consistent performances in one of the world’s most competitive leagues.
