Minority Demands Government Clarification Over Ramaphosa Visit Controversy

Ghana opposition leader
The Minority in Ghana’s Parliament is calling on the government to provide an immediate explanation over the conflicting accounts surrounding the postponement of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s planned engagement with Ghana.

The opposition is demanding that the government brief Parliament to clarify whether Ghana declined a proposed state visit by President Ramaphosa or whether the engagement was simply a routine Ghana-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC) meeting that was postponed by mutual agreement.

The call follows contradictory public statements from officials in both countries, which have fueled debate over the true nature of the diplomatic engagement.

Minority Questions Conflicting Narratives

According to the Minority, the differing accounts from Accra and Pretoria have created uncertainty over what actually transpired.

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has stated publicly that Ghana requested the postponement of President Ramaphosa’s visit due to growing concerns over xenophobic attacks in South Africa and the potential public backlash that could accompany such a visit.

However, the South African Presidency has disputed reports that Ghana rejected a state visit, insisting that no formal request for a state visit was ever made. Pretoria has maintained that the planned August engagement was a routine meeting under the Ghana-South Africa Bi-National Commission framework, which has only been deferred to a later date.

Opposition Raises Diplomatic Concerns

The Minority argues that the conflicting public statements have created unnecessary diplomatic confusion and risk damaging relations between the two countries.

According to the opposition, the situation reflects a lack of coordination in official communication on an issue involving national security and foreign policy.

The lawmakers contend that such inconsistencies have transformed what should have been a routine diplomatic matter into an avoidable public controversy.

Call for Parliamentary Briefing

To address the uncertainty, the Minority is demanding that the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration appear before Parliament to provide a comprehensive policy statement.

The opposition wants the minister to explain the official communications exchanged between the governments of Ghana and South Africa regarding the planned engagement.

In addition, the Minority is seeking clarification on the current status of the Ghana-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC) and whether the meeting has been postponed or rescheduled.

Focus on Protection of Ghanaians in South Africa

Beyond the diplomatic questions, the Minority is also calling on the government to outline the measures being implemented to protect Ghanaians living in South Africa amid recent xenophobic violence.

The opposition wants Parliament to be updated on ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of Ghanaian nationals and the government’s broader diplomatic strategy in response to the security concerns that have strained relations between the two countries.

The request for a parliamentary briefing comes as both Ghana and South Africa continue to emphasize their commitment to maintaining strong bilateral ties despite recent tensions.
