Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has dismissed concerns about the atmosphere awaiting his team at Camp Nou ahead of Sunday’s Clásico against Barcelona, insisting that the opposition’s quality matters more than the venue.
The Portuguese coach acknowledged the challenge posed by Barcelona but suggested that playing at their home ground would not alter his approach to the October 25 encounter.
His first Clásico since returning for a second spell at Madrid comes with significant implications for the title race. Barcelona hold a six-point advantage, meaning victory for the hosts would extend the gap to nine.
Mourinho has nevertheless urged patience with his team’s development. He argued that three months of work, interrupted by staggered player arrivals and international commitments, was insufficient to judge Madrid as a fully developed side.
While Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has welcomed the occasion and praised Madrid’s quality, Mourinho has sought to keep attention on preparation rather than the surrounding drama.
The Madrid boss also expressed respect for Lamine Yamal but indicated that his team would retain its tactical identity rather than reshape its entire approach around the Barcelona winger. He similarly praised Flick’s work with the Catalan club.
Questions about Federico Valverde, Arda Güler and Madrid’s likely formation produced no clues, with Mourinho declining to disclose his selection or strategy.
“You’re smart, but I’m not stupid,” he joked.
Madrid travel to Barcelona seeking to reduce the deficit at the top, with Mourinho keeping his tactical decisions private until matchday.
