NADMO and North Dakota National Guard Deepen Disaster Response Cooperation

Ghana’s National Disaster Management Organisation

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the North Dakota National Guard have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Ghana’s disaster preparedness through joint training, technical exchanges and support for rescue operations.

At a bilateral meeting in Accra on September 29, 2026, a United States delegation led by Brigadier General Mitchell Johnson held discussions with NADMO Director-General, Major Dr. J. B. Kuyon (Rtd), on the next phase of their longstanding cooperation.

The discussions focused on improving emergency response capacity and building on a partnership that has spanned more than two decades.

Among the key initiatives outlined was a large-scale emergency management exercise planned for Ghana in 2027. The North Dakota National Guard indicated that smaller technical exchanges and simulation exercises would take place ahead of the main event to support preparations.

The planned activities are intended to help participating institutions strengthen coordination and improve their readiness to respond to major emergencies.

The visiting delegation also provided updates on the procurement and delivery of specialized watercraft and personal protective equipment for NADMO. The equipment is intended to support rescue missions and flood response operations, particularly in communities where access becomes difficult during emergencies.

Established in 2004 under the United States Department of Defense’s State Partnership Program, the Ghana–North Dakota relationship has supported cooperation involving the Ghana Armed Forces, emergency management institutions and American specialists.

Previous engagements have included disaster simulations addressing flood and earthquake scenarios, providing opportunities for personnel to exchange expertise and practice coordinated responses.

Major Dr. Kuyon expressed appreciation for the continued American support and underscored the importance of sustaining the 22-year relationship.

He said further cooperation would help strengthen Ghana’s preparedness for climate-related risks and reinforce efforts to build a more proactive disaster management system.
