Ghana’s National Security Council Secretariat has arrested 16 people suspected of operating a sophisticated transnational counterfeit currency network across the Greater Accra Region and nearby districts.
The arrests followed six intelligence-led operations conducted between June 12 and July 24, 2026. The coordinated raids reportedly dismantled four major printing centers used to manufacture fake currencies for circulation in commercial hubs and financial markets.
National Security operatives recovered finished counterfeit banknotes totaling US$543,000, GH¢196,600 and CFA60,000 during the operations.
Security personnel also seized unfinished currency coupons with face values of approximately US$5.29 million, GH¢19.55 million and CFA623 million. Four currency-printing machines believed to have been used in the illegal operation were confiscated.
Six vehicles and two motorcycles allegedly used by facilitators and dispatch riders to transport the counterfeit money were also impounded.
According to the Secretariat, the syndicate operated through a structured network involving technical printing specialists, cross-border facilitators and local dispatch riders. The fake currencies were allegedly distributed through foreign exchange markets, retail centers and property transactions.
The 16 suspects include Ghanaian and foreign nationals. Investigations are continuing to identify other individuals connected to the network and determine the full extent of its operations.
Authorities have urged financial institutions, religious organizations, property managers, foreign exchange operators and members of the public to remain alert when handling large or suspicious cash transactions.
The public has also been encouraged to report unusual foreign-currency dealings and high-volume printing activities to the appropriate security agencies. All the suspects remain presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a competent court.
