National Wheelchair Tennis Juniors Camp Returns to Accra Sports Stadium

The National Wheelchair Tennis Juniors Training Camp

The National Wheelchair Tennis Juniors Training Camp has returned to the tennis courts of the Accra Sports Stadium, providing young athletes with physical disabilities an opportunity to develop their skills and pursue competitive tennis.

Organized by the Ghana Tennis Federation’s Wheelchair Tennis Committee in partnership with the International Tennis Federation, the camp forms part of an ongoing effort to identify, recruit and train the next generation of Ghanaian wheelchair tennis players.

Developing Emerging Talent

Following previous sessions at venues including the Army Mess Tennis Club, the program returned to the national stadium to accommodate both emerging players and complete beginners.

Participants were introduced to essential wheelchair tennis techniques through drills designed to improve mobility, racket control, shot selection and match awareness.

National wheelchair tennis coaches Yahya Macaulay and Philip Plange supervised the training with support from regional instructors.

National Players Mentor Juniors

Several senior national team players attended the camp to demonstrate techniques and share their experiences with the young athletes.

They included Maclean Dzidzienyo, Bernard Yawson, Bridget Nartey, Stacy Konadu Mensah and Daniel Laryea. Their participation gave the juniors an opportunity to learn directly from experienced competitors while gaining encouragement to continue developing their abilities.

The involvement of established players also reinforced the camp’s emphasis on mentorship and the creation of a sustainable pathway from grassroots participation to national-level competition.

Federation Reaffirms Support for Inclusive Sport

Ghana Tennis Federation President Isaac Abe Duah and Vice President Cedric Dzelu attended the training sessions, reaffirming the federation’s commitment to inclusive sports development and athlete welfare.

The camp represents another important step in strengthening wheelchair tennis in Ghana, expanding access to structured coaching and creating opportunities for young athletes who may otherwise face barriers to participating in organized sport.

Through continued collaboration with the International Tennis Federation, the GTF hopes to widen its talent pool and prepare more Ghanaian players for national and international competitions.
