The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has barred its Amasaman Constituency Communications Officer, Daniel Nortey, from making media appearances or attending public engagements on behalf of the party following controversial comments about sexual abuse allegations at Obuasi Senior High Technical School.
The directive, announced by the party’s Communication Directorate in a statement dated yesterday October 22, 2026, takes immediate effect and remains in force until further notice.
Nortey’s comments during a televised panel discussion attracted criticism, with members of the public, civil society organizations and political opponents accusing him of downplaying sexual violence.
The discussion concerned allegations against the school’s headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, who was suspended by the Ministry of Education following investigative reports by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni concerning alleged sexual misconduct and abuse involving female students.
Following the backlash, Nortey apologized, saying his remarks were not intended to encourage or justify sexual abuse.
The NDC acknowledged his apology but stressed that statements about sensitive matters, particularly those affecting children’s safety and welfare, require care and responsibility. The party said such issues should not be reduced to partisan exchanges.
Under the directive, Nortey is prohibited from speaking for the NDC in the media or representing it at public engagements until the party announces otherwise.
The controversy has also drawn attention to Abdulai’s bid to become the NDC’s Juaben Constituency chairman. The party subsequently directed him to withdraw from the contest or face disqualification.
