NDC to Rename National Headquarters After Jerry John Rawlings in Major Commemorative Tribute

Rawlings

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), in collaboration with the J.J. Rawlings Foundation, has announced plans to officially rename its national headquarters in Accra in honor of the party’s late founder, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings.

The ceremony is scheduled for Monday, June 22, 2026, and forms part of activities marking what would have been the former President’s 79th birthday.

Headquarters to Be Renamed “Jerry Rawlings House”

As part of the tribute, the NDC will permanently rename its national headquarters located in Adabraka, Accra, as “Jerry Rawlings House.” The decision is intended to immortalize Rawlings’ influence on the party’s formation and his broader legacy in Ghana’s democratic and political development.

A newly crafted commemorative bust of the late statesman will also be unveiled at the entrance of the building, serving as a permanent symbol of his leadership and contribution to national history.

The main ceremony is expected to begin at 9:00 a.m. at the party headquarters, drawing party executives, supporters, and invited guests.

Mahama to Lead Key Commemorative Event

Former President and current NDC leader John Dramani Mahama is expected to lead the event, delivering the keynote address alongside senior party officials.

The commemoration will be held under the theme:
“From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy”, reflecting on Rawlings’ role in Ghana’s political transformation and the evolution of the country’s democratic system.

Public Lecture and Historical Exhibition Planned

Following the morning ceremony, a public lecture and historical exhibition will take place at 4:00 p.m. at the auditorium of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The lecture will be delivered by renowned academic and legal expert Tsatsu Tsikata, who is expected to explore Rawlings’ political legacy and his impact on governance, constitutional development, and national identity.

Institutionalizing Rawlings’ Legacy Within the Party

The renaming initiative forms part of a broader effort by the NDC leadership, led by National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, to formally embed the values and legacy of Jerry John Rawlings into the party’s institutional identity.

As part of these reforms, the party intends to amend its constitution to recognize June 22 as an annual day of mandatory celebration in honor of Rawlings. Additionally, the NDC plans to designate the entire month of June as “NDC Month,” during which a series of commemorative and educational activities will be held each year.

A Lasting Tribute to a Founding Figure

Party officials say the initiative is aimed at preserving the memory of the NDC’s founder while reinforcing his role in shaping the party’s ideology and Ghana’s modern political landscape.

The upcoming ceremony is expected to serve not only as a tribute but also as a reaffirmation of the party’s historical roots and long-term commitment to the principles associated with Rawlings’ leadership.
