The Deputy Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abigail Yaa Mensah, has condemned comments attributed to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin about Presidency official Nana Yaa Jantuah, describing them as sexist, disrespectful and an attack on women in leadership.
In a statement issued on Friday, Ms Mensah criticised the Minority Leader for reportedly referring to Ms Jantuah as “a nobody” and an “unmatched personality” after she received a petition on behalf of the Presidency.
She argued that the remarks should not be viewed merely as a personal attack, but as comments that undermine the contributions and authority of women occupying leadership positions in Ghana.
According to Ms Mensah, questioning Ms Jantuah’s suitability to receive the petition on account of her gender reflects what she described as an attitude of gender superiority and an attempt to deny women their rightful place in positions of authority.
She maintained that Nana Yaa Jantuah holds a legitimate and respected position at the Presidency and should be assessed based on her responsibilities, competence and performance rather than her gender.
The NDC official further argued that the controversy raises broader concerns about attitudes towards women within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
She called on the Minority Leader to issue an immediate and unreserved apology to Nana Yaa Jantuah and Ghanaian women.
Ms Mensah also urged the NPP leadership to publicly clarify its position on gender equality and distance itself from what she described as discriminatory and demeaning comments.
Reaffirming her commitment to promoting women’s participation in governance, she said the NDC Women’s Wing would continue to defend the dignity, respect and rightful place of women in public life.
