Political realignments are beginning to emerge in Nigeria as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections, with some groups and religious leaders publicly reconsidering the positions they adopted during the 2023 presidential race.
Bishop Leonard Kawas and the Charismatic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria are among those reported to have withdrawn their support for former Labor Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and declared their backing for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Explaining the change, the religious leaders said their decision was influenced by their assessment of the Tinubu administration’s performance and policy direction. They argued that the government’s economic and structural reforms were placing Nigeria on the right path, despite the difficulties associated with their implementation.
According to the group, allowing the administration to complete a second term could provide sufficient time for its policies to produce the expected results. The bishops maintained that reforms of such magnitude require continuity and should not be judged solely by their immediate effects.
The development also reflects changing political calculations ahead of the next election. Decisions made during the 2023 campaign were influenced by the political and economic conditions prevailing at the time, but evolving national circumstances have prompted some former supporters of opposition candidates to reassess their positions.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, further defections, endorsements and coalition-building efforts are expected across Nigeria’s political landscape.
