As preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has delivered a strong message to the Black Stars, demanding what he described as “absolute focus, maximum discipline, and total sacrifice” from his players ahead of the tournament.
Queiroz, who was appointed in April 2026 to replace former coach Otto Addo, has quickly moved to establish a stricter and more disciplined culture within the national team setup as Ghana prepares for its return to the world stage.
Speaking on May 9, the experienced Portuguese tactician warned players against complacency and distractions, insisting that only total commitment would be accepted under his leadership. “No distractions. No excuses. Only commitment to excellence,” Queiroz declared as he outlined the standards expected from every player hoping to make the final World Cup squad.
The veteran coach also spoke about the emotional and national responsibility attached to representing Ghana, using a symbolic comparison to describe the pressure of wearing the Black Stars jersey. According to Queiroz, the shirt may weigh “twenty grams” inside the dressing room but feels like “twenty kilos” on the pitch because of the expectations of millions of Ghanaians.
Known globally for his tactical discipline and defensive organization, Queiroz stressed that his football philosophy prioritizes results and collective effort over style. He stated that the team must be prepared to “suffer” during difficult moments in matches and fight together defensively whenever they are without possession.
Queiroz also made it clear that reputation alone will not guarantee a place in the national team, emphasizing that every player must earn selection through performance, discipline, attitude, and character. “Nobody owns the national team shirt,” he reportedly told members of the squad and media representatives.
The 73-year-old coach is preparing for what will be his fifth FIFA World Cup appearance as a manager, having previously guided teams including Portugal, Iran, and Colombia at international level. He is expected to announce Ghana’s provisional World Cup squad later this week as preparations enter a decisive phase.
The Black Stars are scheduled to play two key international friendlies to fine-tune preparations before the tournament begins. Ghana will open its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in Group L against Panama on June 17 before facing heavyweight opponents England and Croatia in the remaining group-stage matches.
