NSS Personnel Arraigned Over Alleged GH¢308,300 Mobile Money Theft, Granted Bail

Court Grants Bail

An Accra Circuit Court has arraigned National Service Scheme (NSS) personnel Ebenezer Ghartey for allegedly stealing GH¢308,300 from his supervisor’s personal Mobile Money (MoMo) account.

Ghartey appeared before the court on July 7, 2026, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The case, which initially attracted attention due to its reported connection to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), has since been clarified by the agency, which emphasized that no institutional funds were involved and described the matter as a private dispute between individuals.

Alleged Seven-Week Scheme

According to the prosecution, Ghartey served as an administrator for his supervisor and allegedly exploited his access to transfer funds from the supervisor’s personal MTN merchant Mobile Money account into his own account.

Prosecutors told the court that the alleged transactions occurred over a seven-week period between March 31 and May 20, 2026, with a total of GH¢308,300 reportedly transferred without authorization.

The alleged theft came to light after an unauthorized withdrawal prompted the account holder to review transaction records, which reportedly identified Ghartey as the recipient of the funds.

Police Detail Alleged Use of Funds

Following his arrest, police alleged that Ghartey admitted to spending the money on several personal purchases.

According to the prosecution, the funds were allegedly used to purchase a Hyundai Elantra, a 50-inch television, various household appliances, as well as to pay rent and school fees.

These claims were presented as part of the prosecution’s account of the case before the court.

Court Grants Bail

Presiding Judge Mrs. Emmanuella Sarah Asmah granted Ghartey bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with three sureties.

As part of the bail conditions, the court directed that at least one surety must be a property owner, while another must be a high-earning public servant.

The accused has also been ordered to report to the police twice each week while the case is pending.

Case Adjourned

The court adjourned proceedings to August 4, 2026, when the case is expected to resume.

Meanwhile, the DVLA has reiterated that the matter does not involve the authority’s finances or operational accounts, stressing that the alleged theft concerns a supervisor’s personal Mobile Money account rather than public funds.
