BUDUBURAM, CENTRAL REGION — A commercial motorcyclist has died and his passenger sustained critical injuries following a collision involving a cargo truck on the Buduburam section of the Accra–Cape Coast highway.
The crash reportedly occurred on Wednesday, August 19, when the cargo truck collided with the motorcycle on the heavily travelled road. The rider died from his injuries, while the passenger was transported for emergency medical treatment.
The circumstances leading to the collision have not yet been officially established.
Accident disrupts traffic
The incident caused disruption along the highway as emergency responders attended to the victims and worked to clear the affected section of the road.
Police are expected to investigate the movements of both vehicles, the condition of the roadway and other factors that may have contributed to the crash. Authorities had not publicly announced any charges at the time of reporting.
Residents renew road-safety concerns
The fatal collision has renewed concerns about safety along the Buduburam corridor, where commercial vehicles, motorcycles and pedestrians frequently compete for limited road space.
Residents and motorists have repeatedly identified congestion, speeding and unpredictable lane changes as major risks along the highway. Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable because they have little physical protection when involved in collisions with trucks and other heavy vehicles.
Community members are calling for stronger traffic enforcement, improved road markings and the deployment of officers to congested sections of the corridor. They also want authorities to accelerate safety improvements intended to protect pedestrians and riders.
The identity of the deceased had not been publicly released. Police investigations into the crash are continuing.
