The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) successfully brought a fuel tanker blaze under control at Asutuare Junction on Sunday, June 28, 2026, in an early-morning emergency response that ended in the tragic death of the tanker driver.
The driver was found burnt beyond recognition, while the truck’s mate survived the incident and is currently receiving treatment at Akuse Hospital.
Authorities say investigations have begun to determine the cause of the fire.
Emergency Response Triggered in Early Hours
According to officials, the GNFS received an emergency distress call at 04:41 AM, prompting a rapid multi-station response to the scene.
Fire crews were deployed from several surrounding stations, including:
- Somanya Fire Station
- Volta River Authority (VRA) Fire Unit
- Akosombo Fire Station
- Gbetsile Fire Station
The coordinated response was led by Station Officer II Achisey, who supervised operations on the ground as firefighters worked urgently to prevent the blaze from spreading beyond the tanker.
Fire Contained Within Two Hours
Firefighters arrived at the scene to find the fuel tanker fully engulfed in flames, with the diesel cargo already ignited.
Despite the intensity of the fire and the risks associated with fuel combustion, crews managed to bring the situation under control by 06:03 AM, before fully extinguishing the fire at 06:30 AM.
Their swift action prevented the fire from spreading to nearby structures, vehicles, and the surrounding community—averting what officials described as a potentially far more devastating disaster.
Casualty and Rescue Efforts
Tragically, the tanker driver was discovered dead at the scene after being trapped in the burning vehicle. His remains were severely burnt, making immediate identification difficult.
The truck’s mate, however, was rescued alive and quickly transported to Akuse Hospital, where he is receiving medical attention for injuries sustained during the incident.
Hospital sources say he is currently in stable condition and under observation.
Vehicle and Cargo Completely Destroyed
The tanker and its entire diesel load were completely destroyed in the fire, resulting in significant material loss.
Authorities have not yet released an estimated financial value of the damage, but fuel tanker incidents typically result in high economic losses due to the vehicle, cargo, and environmental impact.
Security and Safety Measures at the Scene
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service were deployed alongside fire crews to secure the area and manage traffic flow along the busy Asutuare Junction route.
Motorists were temporarily diverted while emergency operations were ongoing, helping to ensure the safety of responders and prevent secondary accidents.
Officials praised the cooperation between fire officers and police, noting that coordinated crowd control was essential in maintaining access for firefighting equipment.
Investigation Underway
Both the Akuse District Police Command and the GNFS have launched a joint investigation into the cause of the fire.
While the exact trigger remains unknown, authorities will examine several possible factors, including:
- Mechanical failure
- Fuel leakage or ignition
- Road accident impact prior to fire outbreak
- Human error or other external causes
Investigators are expected to inspect the wreckage once it is fully cleared and safe to approach.
GNFS Commends Rapid Response Teams
Fire officials have praised the swift coordination between multiple stations, emphasizing that the rapid response likely prevented additional casualties and extensive property damage.
The GNFS reiterated its commitment to strengthening emergency preparedness along major transport corridors, particularly routes frequently used by heavy-duty fuel tankers.
Public Safety Reminder
Authorities are also urging drivers of fuel tankers and other heavy-duty vehicles to adhere strictly to safety protocols, including regular vehicle maintenance and adherence to speed regulations, especially when transporting flammable materials.
Residents and motorists are further encouraged to report early signs of vehicle overheating, fuel leakage, or smoke to emergency services immediately.
While the incident resulted in a tragic loss of life, the Ghana National Fire Service’s swift and coordinated response ensured that the fire did not escalate into a wider disaster.
