One person has died and four others have sustained injuries following a collision involving a Kia VIP Grandbird passenger bus and a MAN diesel truck on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at Frimpongso in the Eastern Region.
Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the commercial passenger bus attempted to overtake another vehicle while travelling along the highway.
During the maneuvers, the driver reportedly lost control of the bus and crashed into the rear of a faulty MAN truck parked along the shoulder of the road.
The force of the collision extensively damaged the front section of the passenger bus, leaving some of its occupants trapped inside the wreckage.
Personnel from the Anyinam Fire Station were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call.
Using specialized hydraulic cutting and rescue equipment, the firefighters extricated two passengers who had been pinned inside the mangled bus. Other injured occupants received first aid at the scene before being transported to a nearby health facility.
One male victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Four other passengers were admitted with injuries of varying severity.
Firefighters secured the accident scene and took steps to prevent a possible fire outbreak or further collisions. The damaged vehicles and other obstructions were subsequently cleared to restore traffic flow along the busy highway.
The Ghana National Fire Service and the police have begun investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the accident.
Investigators are expected to examine the reported overtaking maneuver, the position of the stationary truck and whether adequate warning signs were placed behind the faulty vehicle.
Ghana’s road regulations require drivers of disabled vehicles to use reflective warning triangles or other visible signals to alert approaching motorists, particularly at night or during periods of poor visibility.
The accident has renewed concerns about dangerous overtaking and the risks associated with leaving faulty vehicles along major highways without adequate warning.
Motorists have been advised to exercise caution, avoid risky overtaking and reduce their speed when approaching stationary vehicles, especially during early morning and nighttime journeys.
