Opoku-Agyemang Meets UK High Commissioner to Discuss Trade and Women’s Empowerment

Opoku-Agyemang Meets UK High Commissioner

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has held talks with the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Dr Christian Rogg, on strengthening economic cooperation and expanding opportunities for women and young people.

The meeting, held on October 23, 2026, focused on ensuring that Ghana’s longstanding relationship with the United Kingdom delivers practical benefits through trade, investment, skills development and gender equity.

A central issue was the need to support Ghanaian businesses to move beyond exporting raw materials and increase their participation in value-added production for international markets. The discussions explored how trade arrangements could help local enterprises play a greater role in processing and production.

Both sides also emphasized the importance of adapting bilateral and multilateral cooperation to changing global economic conditions. Investment, enterprise development and sustainable employment featured prominently in the dialogue.

With Ghana’s population growing rapidly, the meeting considered how young people could acquire the technical skills needed to participate effectively in an evolving economy. Youth development formed part of the broader discussion on translating international partnerships into employment opportunities.

On women’s empowerment, Professor Opoku-Agyemang highlighted progress under the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act and the importance of implementation regulations that produce measurable improvements in women’s access to professional opportunities.

She reaffirmed her office’s commitment to encouraging public and private institutions to address structural barriers that limit women’s advancement. This includes ensuring that qualified women have fair access to leadership positions and decision-making roles.

The discussions linked stronger Ghana–UK cooperation with efforts to build a more inclusive economy, placing value addition, youth skills and women’s participation among the priorities for continued engagement.
