Otto Addo Joins FIFA Technical Study Group for 2026 World Cup Analysis Role

Former Ghana Coach

Former Ghana Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has been appointed to FIFA’s elite 11-member Technical Study Group (TSG) for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a major transition from dugout management to elite global football analysis.

The group, assembled at tournament headquarters ahead of the opening matches, brings together leading technical experts tasked with studying and documenting the tactical evolution of the competition.

Addo’s inclusion reflects FIFA’s continued emphasis on blending coaching experience with advanced performance analytics to better understand modern international football trends.

The Technical Study Group is responsible for moving beyond traditional match statistics to analyze deeper tactical and structural developments throughout the tournament.

Working alongside global football experts, Addo will help evaluate how teams adapt tactically in real time across multiple phases of play.

A key part of the group’s work involves detailed monitoring of:

  • Defensive and offensive structural shifts, including how teams transition between low blocks, mid-blocks, and high pressing systems
  • Modern tactical innovations, such as pressing triggers, counter-pressing structures, and evolving set-piece strategies
  • Role specialization trends, including the increasing use of inverted fullbacks and hybrid midfield roles

FIFA’s advanced performance tracking systems will support the group’s analysis, combining physical data such as player movement, speed, and positioning with broader tactical interpretations.

This integrated approach allows the TSG to produce a comprehensive technical report on how the game evolves throughout the tournament.

Beyond tactical analysis, the Technical Study Group also plays a decisive role in selecting the tournament’s top individual performers.

Addo and his colleagues will be responsible for voting on several of FIFA’s most prestigious awards, including:

  • The Golden Ball, awarded to the best player of the tournament
  • The Golden Glove, awarded to the best goalkeeper
  • The Best Young Player Award, recognizing the standout player born on or after January 1, 2005

These selections are based on both statistical performance and technical evaluation conducted throughout the competition.

Addo’s appointment marks a significant shift in his World Cup involvement, transitioning from team leadership to strategic analysis on the global stage.

The 46-year-old previously served as head coach of Ghana’s national team, leading the Black Stars at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He has since been succeeded by veteran coach Carlos Queiroz at the helm of the national team.

While Ghana prepares for its 2026 campaign under new leadership, Addo will instead contribute from the analytical side of the tournament, offering insights drawn from his direct experience in international management and African football development.

FIFA’s decision to include Addo in the Technical Study Group highlights the value of his tactical knowledge and familiarity with both African and global football systems.

His recent experience managing at international level is expected to provide valuable perspective in assessing how teams from different continents adapt to the evolving demands of modern tournament football.

As the 2026 World Cup approaches, Addo’s role will help shape FIFA’s official technical report, influencing how the tournament is studied, understood, and archived for future generations of the game.
