Over GH¢33 Billion Education Budget to Support Schools and Teachers — Vice President

Support Schools and Teachers — Vice President

Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving education, citing an allocation of more than GH¢33 billion in the 2026 budget to support infrastructure, learning resources and teacher development.

Speaking at the 2026 Ghana Teacher Prize ceremony on Monday, October 5, she said sustained investment in schools and educators was essential to improving learning outcomes and preparing students for changing workplace demands.

The Vice President explained that the funding would support the completion of 30 E-block projects and the construction of kindergarten, primary and junior high school facilities across the country.

She also highlighted progress towards ending the double-track system at the secondary level, announcing that 99 schools had transitioned to the single-track arrangement.

The government’s investment includes the provision of textbooks aligned with the curriculum, alongside other teaching and learning materials to support classroom instruction.

Addressing teacher welfare, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang called for broader support that goes beyond resolving administrative concerns and conditions of service. She stressed the importance of housing, professional growth and an environment that enables teachers to perform effectively.

As part of efforts to address accommodation shortages, she outlined plans for 400 four-unit teacher bungalows, particularly to support educators serving in communities where housing remains a challenge.

The Vice President also emphasized the need to prepare teachers for developments in digital technology and artificial intelligence, which are reshaping education and employment.

She said continued investment in in-service coaching, professional development and digital resources would help teachers respond to changing classroom needs and equip learners with relevant skills.
