Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Paul Awentami Afoko, has officially declared his intention to contest for the party’s national chairmanship, outlining a vision centred on grassroots empowerment, youth employment, and increased opportunities for women as part of efforts to position the NPP for victory in the 2028 general election.
Mr Afoko launched his campaign in Damongo during a meeting with constituency and regional executives from the Savannah Region, where he presented his plans to rebuild party unity and strengthen the NPP ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Addressing party executives, he said his leadership would be anchored on three key policy pillars designed to reposition the party and reinforce its organisational structures from the polling station level to the national leadership. While he did not elaborate on all three policies, he indicated that they would focus on promoting internal unity, revitalising the party’s grassroots base, and preparing the NPP to effectively challenge the governing National Democratic Congress in the 2028 elections.
Mr Afoko identified women’s empowerment and youth employment as major priorities of his campaign, arguing that creating opportunities for these groups is essential to strengthening the party’s support base and enhancing its electoral prospects.
Party members who attended the meeting welcomed his message, saying it had renewed confidence among grassroots supporters and expressing optimism that his leadership could help reposition the NPP for a return to government.
The NPP is expected to elect new national executives ahead of the 2028 general election, with Mr Afoko’s declaration set to intensify the race for the party’s top organisational position.
