Peter Obi has called for decisive government action to end Nigeria’s persistent security crisis, warning that repeated killings must not be accepted as a normal part of national life.
The former Anambra State governor expressed alarm over deadly attacks affecting communities in Sokoto, Benue and other parts of the country. His intervention came amid further reports of violence in Plateau and continuing security concerns across several states.
Obi said the victims of banditry, insurgency and community attacks must not be reduced to casualty figures in news reports.
Obi Condemns “Killings, Condolences and Inaction”
In a statement shared through his official social media account, Obi criticized what he described as a recurring cycle of killings followed by condolences, promises and little meaningful action.
He referred specifically to the reported deaths of 32 people in Ungushi, Sokoto State, and attacks in Ukum, Benue State, where additional deaths and injuries were recorded.
“Let’s end this cycle of killings,” Obi said, describing the incidents as deeply painful.
He maintained that statements of sympathy must be accompanied by clear security measures, measurable results and accountability from political and security leaders.
Victims Are More Than Statistics
Obi emphasized that every person killed leaves behind a family and community dealing with lasting pain.
According to him, the victims include parents, children and breadwinners whose deaths can push already vulnerable households deeper into hardship.
Beyond the immediate loss of life, insecurity has forced farmers to abandon their land, displaced families from their homes and weakened economic activity in affected communities.
Obi argued that acknowledging the human consequences of the violence should create a greater sense of urgency among those responsible for protecting the public.
Call for Intelligence-Led Security Operations
The presidential hopeful called for improved intelligence gathering, proactive security deployments and faster responses to threats.
He also demanded stronger protection for vulnerable communities and the diligent prosecution of those responsible for attacks.
Obi said Nigerians should be able to sleep peacefully in their homes, travel on the country’s highways and visit their farms without fearing violence, kidnapping or death.
His recommendations place emphasis on preventing attacks instead of deploying security personnel only after communities have suffered casualties.
Plateau Attack Deepens National Concern
Obi’s statement coincided with reports of another deadly assault in Binper community, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Residents reported that armed attackers entered homes during the night, killing dozens and leaving others injured or missing. Plateau police confirmed the attack and deployed personnel to the affected area.
The violence added to concerns about recurring attacks across rural communities in Nigeria, including parts of Benue, Kaduna, Sokoto and Plateau.
Citizen Protection Must Become Top Priority
Obi urged federal, state and local authorities to place the protection of lives and property above partisan political interests.
He argued that security should be treated as a central responsibility of government rather than one of several competing policy concerns.
Nigeria is not formally engaged in a nationwide war, yet communities continue to record deaths, abductions and displacement associated with insurgency, banditry and communal violence. Obi has repeatedly warned that casualty levels of this nature cannot be normalized.
He extended condolences to the affected families and prayed for comfort for the bereaved and lasting peace across the country.
